Mark Lavis - Unicycling all over the World
1 |
24 year old, Mark Lavis, has voyaged over to Europe for 6 weeks. His primary aim was to compete in the World Unicycle Championships (UNICON) in Italy, Brixen in July. Nearly 2000 competitors descended on the Dolomites to compete in all the disciplines of unicycling (road racing, freestyle, trials, street, mountain etc). Then to follow on he plans to boldly roll where other unicyclists fear to tread around the highlands of europe before his return to Australia.
"I have been riding unicycles for nearly a decade and been drawn to the challenge of off road unicycling for the last 5 of those years. I love to ride anything from enduro XC to technical Downhill. In the last few years I have been racing against mountain bikers in events like the Three Ring Circus (50km), Highland fling (110km), Husky enduro (100km), Karapoti classic (50km) and a number of other races in the NSW/ACT region. Usually I beat the slowest 3rd of the field, but the main point of competing is to challenge myself. I am the current Australian XC and Downhill Unicycling Champion and came 5th in the XC at the last World Championships in Wellington NZ in 2010. I am aiming to take out the overall XC World title this year and put in a good performance in the Downhill competition as well.
In addition to the World Championships, I'll be racing in the Salzkammergut trophy in Austria, as well as a new Teams based Mountain unicycling challenge held in Arosa, Switzerland.
I ride a 26” shiftable 2 speed fixed gear unicycle (1:1-1:1.55) with Hydraulic rim brake, 2.4” tyre and 137mm cranks.
For the last 6 months I have been living and training in Newcastle- utilising the excellent trail systems at Glenrock and Awaba. Before that, I was Canberra based and enjoyed the variety of riding offered at places like Mt Stromlo, Mt Majura, Sparrow Hill and Black Mountain from 2007.
